EMHS ventures forth to the historic mining town of Golden on the Turquoise Trail.  Our first stop is the historic San Francisco de Asis Mission Church and Cemetery, where we will be guests of the parish of St. Joseph, Cerrillos.  Our parish guides are steeped in the history of the building and community.  The church was originally built in the 1830s after gold was discovered in the area. Later abandoned with the decline of mining, today, the renovated church is an active house of worship with an intriguing cemetery.

Our second stop is the Henderson Store which was established in 1918 and is a landmark of the Turquoise Trail. Purchased in 1918 by Ernest and Lucy Riccon, the Golden General Store served area residents with items for their daily needs. In 1962, the store was purchased by their youngest daughter, Vera, and her husband, Bill Henderson. As demand for a general store in the area declined, Vera and Bill began to trade merchandise for Southwestern Indian crafts. Today, their daughter and son-in-law, Desiri and Allen, carry on the tradition of selling high quality Southwestern Indian jewelry, rugs, and pottery.
