March 21 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Join us for a year long, monthly historical lecture series for the Route 66 Centennial in 2026! NOTE: For March, we RESCHEDULED and had a CHANGE IN SPEAKER.
About the Talk. Fred Harvey Indian Detours.
In 1926, the Fred Harvey Company, in conjunction with the Santa Fe Railroad, began offering 1- 2- and 3-day “Detours” of historic and scenic sites in northern New Mexico, led by young woman known as “Couriers.” This presentation will provide an overview of the Detours, with a focus on the Couriers.
About the Speaker. Suzanne Stauffer.
Suzanne Stauffer’s first career was librarian, then second was professor of library science, and now, third — writer of historical fiction — books and history! Stauffer has lived and worked in Utah, Spain, New York City, Los Angeles and LA County, Baton Rouge, and now Albuquerque. She spent summers in Holbrook, Arizona, and in all of the national parks in the Southwest, from Mesa Verde to the Grand Canyon to Yosemite, and many state parks. The Southwest is in her blood! She loves film noir, the Golden Age of mystery (including hard boiled), Victorian literature (especially women authors), E.F. Benson and Dorothy Sayers. In addition to reading, she loves travel, gardening, cooking and baking, and most forms of needlework. Stauffer lives in Albuquerque with her Australian husband and their rat terrier dogter, Tremé.
